After Amherst House fire, 1926
This area view shows the ruins of the Amherst House (at that time the home of the Jones Library) after the fire of December 9th, 1926. Across the street sits the Pariseau Block and the Cosby house on land where the future Jones Library will be built.
“College boys formed a hand-to-hand brigade and conveyed many of the Library’s possessions out and into the nearby stores and fire station. As book-savers they were cool, systematic, and inestimably serviceable.” Jones Library in Amherst 1919-1969, Frank Prentice Rand, 1969

Jones Library in the Whipple house, 1926
The Jones Library trustees had purchased the Frank S. Whipple house on North Pleasant Street before the disastrous 1926 fire that destroyed the Amherst House (at that time the home of the Jones Library). The Whipple house stood approximately where the Central Fire Station now stands. The Library remained in the Whipple house for almost two years.
“It was only an old-fashioned farm house, heated by air-tight stoves. But with almost incredible celerity Green and the trustees appropriated six first-floor rooms, and before noon on the day following the fire salvaged books and furniture were being moved in. And the next morning the Library reopened for business.” Jones Library in Amherst 1919-1969, Frank Prentice Rand, 1969
