Following the death of his wife, Samuel’s will left his fortune to Minot, but stipulated that should Minot die before age 21, the estate would go to establish a free library in Amherst, the Jones Library. Samuel Minot Jones died October 10, 1912, at age 76. Unfortunately, Minot contracted Spanish influenza, followed by pneumonia, while serving in the Army Tank Corps in
North Carolina, and died December 16, 1918, at age 19.
