Phoenix Row in Amherst after a fire
Title
Phoenix Row in Amherst after a fire
Subject
Amherst (Mass.)
Description
View of Cook's Block on the west end of Phoenix Row with part of the roof burned off after the fire of April 4, 1881. A few trees in front of the block are coated with ice. The Amherst Record (April 6, 1881) states, "The cold was severe with the mercury below the freezing point. The street and sidewalk in front of the stores were covered with ice and became very slippery ; the trees near the sidewalk were loaded with fozen water and gave the appearance of a sleet storm in mid-winter." The fire started in the Delta Kappa Epsilon rooms on the top floor.
