Strong sense of presence
Johnson’s photographs reveal intimate moments of life at Burroughs’ home Riverby, as well as views into his private workspace at Slabsides. Despite our separation in both time and space, we cannot help feeling a strong sense of presence. Johnson’s photographs are grounded, in viewing them it is as if we are transported back through time with Burroughs there to guide us through the land he knows so well. Through Johnson’s photographs, we witness the strength of the farmhands, the tranquility of each wayside pond, and the beauty of life in the Catskills.
