Trees grow in the middle ground and town buildings are visible in the background. Caption reads: "A piazza group on the picturesque outskirts of Vicksburg. The weather is warm, and that is why the baby's head is protected from the sunshine by a towel. A broken window, and the condition of the steps show plainly that the family is very poor."
