Palmer Block in Amherst
Amherst (Mass.)
View of the block which stood on the site where Town Hall now stands. It burned to the ground during the Blizzard of 1888. It was often referred to as the "Opera House" due to the large hall on the third floor which was the venue for concerts and other entertainments, as well as town meetings. This image shows people standing on the sidewalk facing the photographer, many who appear to be employees of the businesses in the block. Visible business signs include Palmer & Banks, H. O. Pease, and a job printing business.
