Terrace Home School on South Prospect Street in Amherst

View of the school which came to be called the Terrace Home School on South Prospect Street. It was run for many years by Josephine Herrick and was a school for children with special needs. Instruction was given in instrumental and vocal music, physical training, easy manual and domestic work, and orderly habits of personal care, neatness, self-control and politeness.

View of Thomas W. Smith sitting in a cart holding the reins attached to a horse. Written on back: "Thomas W. Smith as he appeared in the Horribles Section of the parade at the Flag Pole dedication. Picture taken at rear of 31 North Prospect Street. Horse belonged to John Musante."
Thomas W. Smith was Amherst town clerk from 1912 to 1930.
Many parades in the nineteeth century had a "horribles" section consisting of people wearing funny and grotesque costumes.

Construction was completed on this building in 1890 and included an attached shed, glass house, and ornate Victorian greenhouse (later removed). It was designed by Emory A. Ellsworth of Holyoke.
