New York March y(?) 5th 1759.
Sir
I have received your letter of
the 26th of February, since which date the
Carpenters will undoubtedly have very soon
arrived at Albany, as they were dispatched
from hence at the intended time.
I have advertised that the
advance money for the Battoes men should be
paid on the 20th of march instead of the 10th
(something?) as you will see by the enclosed. The
difference of time for the ox team drivers &
waggoners is so small that I have made no alteration in that.
As all the Persons who were
to enter into this service are to send their
names to you as by the first advertisements,
I think it is better you should either send a
proper Person or fix(?) on any one you may
Lt Col Bradstreet D J(?) Master General know
[page 2]
know at or near the Towns where the
advance pay is to be issued, who may be
a proper Judge, and will take care that none
may receive the advance pay but such as
appear fit for the service, and of course
are under the Captains who will have
applyed to you, they are afterwards to be
reviewed by proper officers at Albany.
Captain Lowning(?) is at present
employed in building whale Boats intended
for the service of Troops in the Transport Ships.
I would be prepared for every thing that the
Situation of the Enemy and the numbers of
His Majestys Troops which are to act this
Campaign may put in my Power to attempt,
I have named the 10th of April to press
things forward as much as I can, and I would
begin to act from the first moment that the
season(?) will permit, at the same time I am
to tell you in confidence that the time prescribed
to me from England is the first of may,
and as that will give you time for building
Battoes at Albany, for any service that may be
[page 3]
hearafter thought proper to execute(?) by the
Lake ontario, I shall be very glad that you
will be prepared for it, as you will have the
workmen with you. this will take off
a very great expence that would be incurred
in building them at Boston, Capt Lowning(?) may
finish what he is about there, and then I think
the sooner he comes to Albany the better.
I have given a warrant to you
on Mr Mortier(?) for £3000, that he may give
you the necessary credit for paying the advance
Pay to the Battoes men vea.(?) and as Mr.
Normandy has acquainted me he waited for
your orders, I send him to you with this which
will be quicker than the Post, and give you
time for sending proper People to the Towns
where the Battoes Men yea(?) are to repair.
The Purchases of oxen & Horses
must yet remain some little time for no money
is come, you will however be prepared and
at a certainty where to have them when
called for.
I send you a copy of another
advertisement I have though proper to
[page 4]
to publish, that the country people may
not suffer through any Ignorance of not
knowing where to apply
Mr Mortier(?) has just now
Lent me a Bill of exchange for £1000, and
he will write to you and give you proper
credit for the £2000 remaining of the warrant
I have signed. The Draft for £1000 (something?)
(something) currency is enclosed herewith. as I will not detain Mr.
Normandy, but that he may set off directly I shall
only write a few Lines to (something) General Gage.
You will therefore be so good to shew him
this letter with the enclosed advertisements.
I am with great truth
Sir
Your most humble
and most obedient servant
Jeff: Amherst

John L. Lovell Collection
Description
An account of the resource
John L. Lovell (1825-1903) was a professional photographer. He came to Amherst in 1856 and established the Amherst Picture Gallery, the first photographic studio in Western Massachusetts. In addition to studio work, Lovell was interested in scientific photography, accompanying an Amherst College astronomical team to California in 1882, as well as photographing Connecticut Valley geological features.
His photos provide the best visual documentation from the 1860s to the 1890s of the successive transitions Amherst made from an agricultural town, to an industrial one, and finally, to a town known chiefly for its educational institutions. Moreover, Lovell’s images provide the best visual available documentation of Emily Dickinson’s community. Early images of the Dickinson houses, the streets, shops, and businesses the family knew intimately – all are found within this very important collection.
John L. Lovell Collection (ca. 1860s – ca. 1890s) can be seen in its entirety at the Jones Library. It includes negatives; 59 stereopticon views of Amherst; 40 cartes de visite; and 1200 prints. The collection includes the first surviving photos of Amherst. Subjects include Amherst and the Connecticut Valley, especially architecture, businesses, construction, etc. Biographical reviews in local newspapers of the day; advertisements for his business and other materials accompany the photographs. The cartes de visite are significant because of extensive collateral material in the manuscript collection.

June 5, 1757 Hadley 2nd Precinct
To His Excellency Thomas Pownall Esqr. Govr & Comdr in Chief and over his Magty Provinces of the Masstts Bay in New England:
May it please yr. Excellncy
We yeoman of the town of Hadley in the 2d Precinct
would for sundry reasons wh. hereinafter will appear with serious entreaty pray for yr attention in filling the blank wh appears in the act of the Gnl Court for errecting the second precinct in the town of Hadley in
the county of Hampshire in an independt District.
Since it is the custom for the Gnl. Court to establish new Districts in the several provinces, leaving the naming of the District thus errected to the choice and wisdom of yr excellncy together with the Honbl Council, and since informtn has come to the knowledge of a number of Inhabitants of the District about to be errectd which gives them concern as to the name wh yr excellcy may be inducd to affix we humbly pray to be consider 1st yr excellncy cannot be unmindful of the services which Sir Jeffery Amherst K,B has renderd the colony in the attack on the town of Louisburgh, nor of the fact that a main part in that attack was borne by troops en-listed from the county of Hampshire in wh. the new District is to be errected. Nor are we on our part forgetful of the distinguished friendship wh. has ex-isted between yrslf and Sir Jeffery wh. of itself brings his name to our most kindly liking. We do therefore pray that the blank now existing in the act just passed may be filled with the name of Amherst in token of our regard for the worthy
knight and of yor own admirable friendship for
the same.
2nd We are the more earnest In our petition from
the information above referrd to wh. makes us
fear that a part of our Inhabitants, with
designs against the reputation of our new
District, may persuade yr excelinCY to give us
a name wh. Is as sounding brass and
tinkling cymbals.
[Page 2]
These men be it understood by yr excellncy are not payers of parish rates in the Town of Hadley but have estates in the town beyond the River now called Northampton and they lie in wait to induce you to give us the name refused by them.
This Town of Northampton In the early histy of the colony was called North wattock or Nort-wootock, wh. doth appear from the records of the Gill court in 1656. This name they wish for us, while we would not with uncharity say ought against these worthy yeomen —
yet it does seem to some of our simpleminded people
that the inhabitants of Northampton are trying to put on us a name wh. they cast off from themselves to prevent our hoped for prosperity and we humbly pray yr excellency to protect the people of this District in the independence of their own choice. (A matter wh. we have to recently contested with His MagStY Govermt to be now light¬ly esteemed)[crossed out] And moreover we would resptfly direct yr attention to the name which is in danger of being hung like a millstone about the neck of this new and struggling District.
It is known here among us that the name North wattuck is not even the name as it stands in the Indian tongue. It Is there Norwotuck. Yet yr petitioners do beg that even the original name be not given us but Amherst instead. Yr Exellency may be attracted by the sound of the Indian name and we confess it has a goodly sound in the ears of those who have not known the uses to wh. it has been put. These men of Northampton will also tell you of Its meaning wh. is in our language “extensiveness†or wide—spreading†and is well suited to the far reaching valley wh. we behold from our estates in the new District.
[Page 3]
This name wh. has so goodly a sound and so suitable a meaning was refused by the aforesaid people of Northampton and is now offensive to us because of certain purposes to wh. it has been put, which we will now inform yr excellncy of.
It is a thing quite common among the Indians inhabitants of this province to speak of their burial—places as Norwotucks. The reason of this we have not been able more fully to find than this: that as the name means wide reaching or far extending, and as
the ignorant and savage notions of the soul are mainly that it is wide-reaching like the air, so they have come to name the place where the body lies without the soul by the name of the thing which is not there. This method of naming yr exeliCY will recognize as common among savage people.
This usage of the word would not be offensive to yr. petitioners were it the only one, for we regard our chief concern to be with death and it might be not wanting in edification that the name of our new Town shall add to the solemn nature of our pilgrim days. But we have one more usage to describe to yr exellncy wh. will be yet more pertinent against its being imposed on us.
When yr petitioners first cast their lot with the colony
of this Province we did often hear young Indian boys of the age of 10 or 12 yrs called Norwotucks and that by the older Indian youths in a tone of contempt. It drew little attention from us till we were troubled by the rumor that the same name would(?) be given our new Town. Then we dilligently inquired, and for some time
[Page 4]
were wanting in success, for it seems to be a (private [crossed out]) usage of the Indians wh. they come(?) unwillingly to divulge to the white man. At length one of our number of great intercourse with the tribe found the reason for this usage. An old Indian told him that it was only given to Indian boys when they began to shoot with the bow and arrow, and as their arrows then reached wide of the mark they were called Norwotucks or wide reachers. Moreover, he said, all Indian boys try hard to become good shooters that they may as speedily as possible escape this name, and are then named Hooducks. This usage of the name Norwatucks we have confirmed by assiduous toil and investigation and do now present it to yr. excellency as the chief reason why it be not given to New District errected from the 2nd precinct of the Town of Hadley.
Yr petitioners humbly supplicate yr Excellcy & Honor to take the case under consideration, and grant us the name of Amherst in such manner as in yr wisdom and justice you shall see meet.

When you was here, I had the most sanguine prospects of making you a payment before this time, but we have had nothing but a scene of war and distress since the beginning of Feby. which has prevented my collecting any money worth your receiving, you may depend on my exercions in your favor as soon as there is the least propect of success -- On Tuesday morning the 27 ulto. about daybreak I had my house surrounded by twelve armed men, with a demand of enterance and surrender to Shays with the most horrid imprecations and diabolical visages that is possible to possess the human appearance before we could have time to determine whether it would be best to grant them enterance, they drove their bayonets thru the window of my lodging room and by repeated thrusts broke the sash and 6 or 8 lights of glass, in the room I, my wife and small children lodged, then with the same degree of vailance burst an outside door and an entery door which led into the same room, pointed the bayonet to my wives breast, with a demand of arms and arminition at the same time they had found enterance into almost every room of my house, after getting what arms and arminition they could find, and what plunder they pleased, which consited of cloathing, silver buckles some cash hats etc etc they ordered us to prepare to march immediately to head quarters, which was then at Mr. Bingham, where I found almost all my neighbours in the same unhappy situation. The commanding officer, Capt. Hamblin, informed me I must go with him and gave me permission to return home and take an horse or sleigh and what other comforts I pleased, which I considered as a very great indulgence, they plundered 6 horses and mounted them as videts [?] and marched out of town sun almost two hours high in the morning with 32 prisioners, we went to Barrington where they were joined by a number more, our Friends at Barrington got information timely to make their escape to Sheffield, where with an uncommon ardor and spirit they collected a force sufficient to attack them, which they did on the road from Barrington to Sheffield, tho; they decoyed them out of the common road, there strength was nearly equal the prisioners were pressed on at the point of the bayonet ot the scene of action a cruelty unknown in the most barbarous Nation, but kind providence so ordered it that but one of the poor prisioners fell, whether by the fire of our people or the rebels is uncertain, the attack was vailant and resolute on both sides, Hamblin received a mortal wound, which disconcerted his men, and they fled with precipitation into every direction, leaving one dead and two mortally wounded, by the seasonable reinforcement under Genl. Patterson in their rear, about fifty of there number were made prisioners, we lost two killed and one wounded, but I hope not mortal, Thus ended this rash incursion of the rebels, which they plumed themselves much on - I have spun out this to a much greater length then I intended, am
Your Friend
& Servt.
Erastus Sargeant.
