American flag on Amherst Town Common
American flag
Amherst (Mass.)
View of the flag pole with waving American flag which was dedicated on the Town Common on July 4, 1899. Photograph probably taken from a building in Merchants' Row. Written in the Amherst Record of June 28, 1899, "For the first time in many years Amherst is to have a genuine old-fashioned 4th of July celebration. The occasion is the presentation to Edwin M. Stanton Grand Army post of a handsome and expensive flag and staff by George Cutler, Jr., and Leonard M. Hills. The staff will be planted on the common, facing Merchants' Row; it is constructed of steel, 100 feet in height, and is the only one of its kind in Massachusetts. The flag is of the best make, 10 x 20 feet in size."
